W3- Nonviolent Communication (NVC): Effective tool for conflict resolution, advocacy, respectful conversations and personal growth

This workshop introduces participants to Nonviolent Communication created by psychologist and international peacemaker Marshall Rosenberg. NVC has been used worldwide to resolve difficult conflicts and foster caring connections. Service coordinators can use NVC for: conflict resolution, advocacy, personal growth and communication with residents, families, management and outside providers. Participants will learn the four basic NVC steps and apply them to expressing themselves and listening to others. Supportive resource materials will be provided.

Substance abuse among the elderly population has been called one of the fastest growing health problems in the country. According to recent statics, substance abuse among those 60 years and older currently affects about 17 percent of the U.S. population. And with the onslaught of baby boomers, these statistics could to double by 2020. Participants of this workshop will develop a basic understanding of substance abuse disorders in the older populations and the treatment resources available for these individuals.

W11- On the Horizon in the Multifamily Housing Service Coordinator Program

Nearly 4 million American families live in rental housing that is owned, insured or subsidized by HUD. To ensure that these families have housing that is decent, safe, sanitary and in good repair. HUD’s Real Estate Assessment Center (REAC) conducts physical inspections on properties each year. This session, geared towards Property Managers, will give you insights into the “Top 10” deficiencies REAC Inspectors across the country have been finding at rental properties along with strategies and tips for improving your success with these inspections and how to minimize your Level 1, 2 and 3 deficiencies.

W13- Health Care Fraud, Scams and Abuse: What Service Coordinators Need to Know

This panel presentation will inform participants about the SMP program in their respective states and provide them with resources and contacts to address health care fraud targeted toward older persons. Through interactive exercises, tips, and new strategies, participants will learn about the nationwide network of SMPs, the only governmental program that recruits and trains volunteers to empower people to become responsible consumers of healthcare. SMP volunteers across the country play an important role in educating older Americans and their caregivers on how to identify and report suspected health care fraud. Information will be provided on the latest in scams and fraud schemes reported from across the country by the SMP network. Service Coordinators will be encouraged to contact and partner with their SMP locally to help protect their residents from fraud.

There are many times the service coordinator needs to understand the role and duties of the property manager. This workshop is intended for new and seasoned property managers looking for a refresher as well as service coordinators. W16- Understanding MOR and Top Ten Findings Made In MOR Reviews

Monitoring project operations is required to ensure that HUD’s multifamily housing programs are administered as intended by identifying deficiencies to eliminate fraud, waste, and mismanagement. This session will provide property managers, owners/developers with information on the ins and outs of Management Occupancy Reviews and common findings along with strategies for preparing for these reviews.

During this interactive session participants will gain understanding and tools to enhance documentation skills while maintaining compliance with HUD guidelines. Basic information including “What is Documentation”, “Why We Document”, and “Recommended Practices” will be covered before diving into a more comprehensive discussion. The presentation will also focus on the anatomy of a typical entry, as well as case studies to demonstrate what should be in a file. The final portion will concentrate on file form utilization, covering the various documents needed as well as how to utilize them appropriately. In closing, participants will be introduced to reporting and tracking as related to documentation.
